Maria Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987, in Nyagan, Russian SFSR, and moved to the United States with her father to begin her training at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy at the age of nine.

On her fourteenth birthday, she began her professional career and nevertheless continued to compete with her peers, to come second in both the Wimbledon Junior Championships and the French Open since 2002.

In 2003 Sharapova achieved her first win from the WTA women’s tennis tournament in the AIG open tournament in Japan, and she also managed to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon and on her first attempt. The following year she won the Wimbledon Championship, becoming the first Russian woman to win the tournament, and then won the WTA Championship again, adding another victory to her list of achievements.

She became the first Russian woman to rise to the top of the sports rankings in 2005 and achieved her second victory in the Grand Slam tournament by winning the US Open.

Sharapova admitted in March 2016 that she had failed a doping test that was conducted on her in January during the Australian Open.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is set to announce their decision about Maria Sharapova’s case on June 8, 2016. The ban from practicing can last for two years if the tests reveal a positive result.

In October 2016, and after submitting an appeal against the previous decision, the Sports Arbitration Court announced that it reduced the penalty period to fifteen months, meaning that it will be able to return to the international competition on the 25th of April 2017.

Afterward, she dated Bulgarian tennis pro Grigor Dimitrov from 2013 to 2015. She has been linked to Paddle8 co-founder Alexander Gilkes since 2018 and the pair got engaged in December 2020.
