About the recipe

Reuben Classical Sandwich

The sandwich was created in the early 19th century by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. It is a sandwich made with bread that is usually grilled or toasted and then topped with various meats such as sliced beef, turkey, ham, bacon, sausage and cheese. The sandwiches are usually served on long slices of bread or between two pieces of bread with the crusts cut off.

The sandwich started to be called ‘Reuben’ in the late 1920s when a deli owner named Reuben Kulakofsky who was from New York began serving it and claimed it was his favorite sandwich. In 1938 Reuben’s son Paul opened up The Reuben Sandwich Shop in St Louis Missouri where he served an all-beef version of the Reuben which includes thousand island dressing.
