Denzel Washington was born in Mount Vernon, New York on December 28, 1954. His full name is Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. He is the middle of three children born to Lennis Washington, a Georgia beautician, and Denzel Washington, Sr., a Virginia Pentecostal pastor.

His parents split when he was 14, and his mother enrolled him in the exclusive prep school Oakland Military Academy in New Windsor, New York. Later, Washington stated, “That choice transformed my life because I would not have lived if I had continued in my previous path.

My running pals, with whom I was hanging out at the time, have since spent perhaps 40 years in the penitentiary. They were good men, but the streets had other plans for them.” He attended Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida from 1970 to 1971 after graduating from Oakland.

He was thinking about going to Texas Tech University: “We were the Red Raiders when I was a kid at the Mount Vernon Boys Club. So when I was in high school, I wanted to go to Texas Tech in Lubbock, since they were known as the Red Raiders and wore jerseys that were similar to ours.”

In 1977, he graduated from Fordham University with a BA in Drama and Journalism. He was a guard for Fordham University, where he was coached by P.J. Carlesimo.

Washington served as the creative arts director of the overnight summer camp at Camp Sloane YMCA in Lakeville, Connecticut, after deciding on a degree and taking a semester off.

  • Katia (born November 27, 1986), who graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts in 2010, is the twin sister of John David (born July 28, 1984), an actor and former football player (born April 10, 1991). Olivia appeared in Lee Daniels’ film The Butler, and Malcolm, who was named after the MALCOLM X, received a degree in cinema studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
